I know exactly what you mean about Lily. I think you do a lovely job of adapting her. I feel similarly about Severus in his younger years - we know a bit about him from that time but not a great deal. My interpretation is that he was a sullen boy and exhibited typical antisocial traits of abuse, but was not yet completely entrenched in bitterness like he is as an adult. I do think that Lily is the one person who gave him hope for a happy life and so expressed that more freely around her... that is, until he ruined their friendship. Lol.
